QUISQILIA - Uta Uta
Cardboard, Paper, Metal

The latin word QUISQUILLA is a word for refuse; odds and ends, dregs, waste. I love this elegant word. it seems to make anything made of disposable materials move into a more spectacular light.... for this sculpture I used a cardboard tube (onto which fabrics are rolled), embellished with layers of small pieces of various brown paper. The arms come from egg cartons, the end of which hold small, tea-stained vertebrae and tendrils infused with knots - except for one, which has a small coral at its end . The base is the bottom of a lamp which I painted with bronze paint infused with patina.
I imagined this to be a plant from another world. The strings are the seed carriers of the female arms. The stringless arm is the male..... for lack of a more natural base, like a big stone with a hole drilled into it, I resorted to the lamp base (from REPURPOSE PROJECT, for many of us a favorite store!
