Nowhere, Slowly - Heather Hailstones
Acrylic, soft pastel, graphite, charcoal
24" x 36" x 1.5"
These works are part of my “Turbulence” series, inspired by the restlessness I've been feeling during this weird and turbulent COVID time. I'm bored, I'm anxious, and I'm desperate to get out. I absolutely love to travel and explore the world so being stuck in one place for so long has been hard for me.
Creating this collection of mixed media pieces was a therapeutic process that came of my experimentation with pouring watered down acrylics over the canvas then filling in lines and shapes over it with acrylic paints, spray paint, soft pastels, charcoal, and other media. They turned into maps of my inner world.
There's a lot movement and action in these pieces, they each represent clashing feelings of life coming to an abrupt halt like a train caught in a delay and the strong urge I have to hop on a plane or a train and get out of my every day life. These works are meant to serve as a reminder that there's always a little turbulence in any journey, but it’s all part of the greater adventure.
