The original photograph was captured by Marco Downing at UF’s Nanoscale Research Facility. The image depicts a fly’s eye and was taken on an NanoSEM at 800x magnification. Each “cone” of the compound eye is about 15 microns or just under 1 thousandth of an inch! Halea Downing taking inspiration from the unique properties of eyes experimented with light and color to finish the piece.
